I'm holding out

for a god who is kinder than any of the ones I've encountered thus far.

Maybe there's some sort of inverse correlation, among gods, between kindness and power. If that were the case, I guess I'd also be on the lookout for a god who was weaker than any of the ones I've encountered thus far.

If that were the case, it would kind of suck, at some level. I mean isn't part of the point of god that she is supposed to ... embody a fix for that particular inverse correlation?

I applaud you for your honesty! It is refreshing!

What about the fact that Jesus became weak on behalf of his people, emptying himself out? That weakness, in laying down his life, was the right kind of power. The only kind of power that can release us from our own weakness to save ourselves.

i think weakness is actually very strong and powerful...

i like the oppositey-things you and mike refer to. there's something wise in that which seems ridiculous...

Benjamin, i cannot recommend the book "Small Gods" by Terry Pratchett highly enough. You'll laugh and cry and i hope appreciate it as much as i do. Another good one about the "end times" he wrote with another bloke, can't remember the name.

I read Christ of the Celts and other books by J.Philip Newell over the summer and found them all very affirming. I don't know if Newell goes to church, but while he seems to find Christ very important in his life his emphasis is more on a Christian spirituality than on church and he is very aware that church doesn't help everyone, possibly himself included.

You're a goofball, dude. I might be wrong, but I'm under the impression that God is a little more than the Cosmic Duct Tape you want him/her/they/it/ to be. Why does everything have to fit into your neat little understanding to be real/true/actual/legitimate? Where is the room for wonder, to have your mind blown?

I had fun the other day. We should drink more beer in January.
